Maryana Garcia - Pace and Place

Who doesn’t envy the life of a travel blogger? Well, a couple of months ago, I got to live the dream. I got a little taste of travel writing. This Easter 2019 was a life-changing time for me. Not only did I have the opportunity to journey to Rome on pilgrimage, but I also had the chance to visit Madrid, Torreciudad, and Barcelona in Spain. It was a time of reflection, of inspiration, and of wonder.

Yes, it’s true, while I was away, I did most of the things that poets and songwriters write about. I felt the cobblestones under my feet, tasted pizza at Piazza Navona, and literally danced outside La Sagrada Familia (in Barcelona, in case you don’t know the song). Every moment took my breath away and even the little lows we experienced never even factored onto the scale of our enjoyment.

I was surprised, given the whirlwind adventure, by how much I learnt. My trip was also an opportunity of growth and that was part of (if not essential to) its joy. Lessons came to me in the strangest of places, from the crypt of St Peter’s Basilica, to the winding country road in a tiny Spanish town. These lessons were simple. They were nothing I had not heard before. But the combination of place, time, pace, people, and peace merged, bringing the lessons home to me in a new way.

What were these lessons, you might ask? Without further ado, here they are in all their short sentence glory.

  1. You’ve got to be grateful for what you have.

  2. It’s not the experience that matters, it’s your readiness to take away from that experience everything that will make you a better you.

  3. Slow down. Create space to face yourself: to be.

And like the poet that I am, I was not sure what else to do but to write poems that express the many spirits of my experience. I’ve decided to share these poems with you.

Remember to watch the Sun.

Her light is change,

is chance,

is glory.

So let it hit, burn, peel you

Until all you can feel is heat.

Until you radiate your own fire.

May we build in standing stones, raise dust with our voices.

Our echoes should grow louder with repetition,

Never fade.

The world is already ringing.

Life is now a song.

We may fall in and out of step, beat the wrong melody.

The trick is to never stop playing.

To build crazy, build high.

Every human is a destination.

We are cities, wide open and wishing.

Our roads are drawn in infinite squiggles.

We are continuous.
